R3 Vox (R2Sonic’s new incarnation in Malta) will hopefully be releasing the Voxometer in Q1 next year. It is a multibeam, but then it isn’t, as it collects voxels (squares) of data at multiple frequencies all at the same time. This will open up new products, acquisition methods and could really be a game changer. […]
Get your abstract writing mits out for the European Geophysical Union session on multibeam water column data.
Now that I am the Chief Strategy Officer for XOCEAN I thought I would get back to blogging about any high resolution seabed mapping related news. So my first post should be about the amazing XO-450 USVs. We are currently up to X09 and should be to X12 by early next year. The only USV […]
Kongsberg are launching “MultiFrequency mode” and there is a webinar tomorrow to sign up to https://www.kongsberg.com/maritime/about-us/news-and-media/blog-stories/webinar-em-multifrequency/ Similar to R2Sonic’s multispectral mode maybe?
Isobel Yeo of GEOMAR’s Helmholtz Institute for Ocean Research Kiel is calculating the date of lava flows from undersea volcanoes by using the reflectivity returned by sonar backscatter. Nice article on the BBC website here http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20160808-the-volcanoes-hiding-in-the-ocean and her paper can be downloaded here http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0012821X16000510
It looks like R2Sonic have been busy. Pitch stabilisation and ROBO mode! Major firmware & GUI releaseStandard frequency range is expanded to 170-450kHz for Sonic 2026 systems, and Sonic 2022 and 2024 systems with model 1006 projectors.GUI now includes ROBO Mode for shallow water surveys less than 40m in depth, simplifying sonar operation.700kHz UHR option […]
I’ve been working on this for a few months now and finally we can talk about it. Qimera should really change the way that multibeam data is processed. No complicated setup, an intuitive interface and unbelievably powerful features and speed. More posts to follow on this!

MCA have just released the Richard Montgomery Survey report from the 2011 survey that MMT-NetSurvey conducted. It’s also been in the news recently about whether it will stop the building of a new London airport. I hope it will because Heathrow is much easier to get to for me.
